domingo ultimo.
i went to church sunday morning in a very cute little chapel where they locked us in until the meetings were over (actually, there is a basketball court in front of the church and there are times they lock the door to keep other kids from not playing while church is going on). there are a lot of people who speak tzutijil in the branch so those who can are constantly speaking in both spanish and the mayan dialect. it was a small branch....very nice.
for the afternoon i headed to pana to arrange my trip out. met a couple very cute kids on the way out---alfonzo and maria. very cute. they were delivering a bag of stuff to their dad in pana and then returned to santiago with him.
i had a relaxing afternoon in pana. a nice lunch, walked around and looked at stuff a bit and put together my escape from santiago. walking back towards the dock someone told me that i just missed the last boat for santiago and pointed to a boat that just left. BUT, they had a private boat that could take me... of course they did. if i wanted to pay through the nose. for a moment i panicked, wondering if the boats really did stop earlier on sunday, but i kept walking and got on a boat for 20q....same price as always. it was perhaps the most painful boat ride ever, the later in the day and the rougher the lake and this was a rough day, but i made it back to the house about 2 minutes before the sky cracked open and the rain began to pour...
